Weight Loss Coupled with Vitamin D3 to help eliminate Cancer Risk

Voila! Another benefit of weight loss has been discovered. According to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, weight loss if combined with Vitamin D supplementation will have a massive effect in reducing chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation can lead to cancers due to its contribution to the development of several diseases.

Women who are overweight, having insufficient Vitamin D levels, an year long study on them shows that levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL) 6 will be a lot reduced than the weight loss alone if opted for the supplementation of weight loss plus Vitamin D.

“We know from our previous studies that by losing weight, people can reduce their overall levels of inflammation, and there is some evidence suggesting that taking vitamin D supplements can have a similar effect if one has insufficient levels of the nutrient,” said by Catherine Duggan, a PhD from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

She further added that the “Clinicians should encourage maintenance of a healthy weight to reduce chronic inflammation and its associated effects. Overweight individuals should be tested for vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency and supplementation advised as necessary,”

About Vitamin D

Having multiple functions, vitamin D is s steroid hormone that helps in regulating the calcium levels and bone metabolism. In more than 30 cell types, vitamin D receptors are found and the research focus has recently shifted from bone health to vitamin D’s effect on cancer, including other health issues cardiovascular health and weight loss.

About inflammation

Inflammation is observed when the body is exposed to pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses that bring the immune system in a vulnerable condition. Chronic inflammation occurs in people who are obese or overweight.

What the researchers observed

Women who received vitamin D3 lost 5% to 10% of baseline weight having a greater decrease in the levels of interleukin-6 as compared to those who are overweight and who have opted for no such vitamin D3 treatment.

Conclusion

It is said that, with the reduction of weight many diseases are eliminated so as the inflammation that is the contributing factor to dealing with the cancer risk. There would be an improvement in the tools that can be used to reduce the cancer risk if it is ensured that the vitamin D level is optimum and can decrease inflammation greater than what the weight loss can do alone.
